IIHF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS SATURDAY
The World Championships are set to begin Saturday May 8th with Team Canada taking on Italy in round robin play. Two former Warriors will be joining the red and white in Germany. Ryan Smyth and Brooks Laich will both be on the this year's roster.
Along with the two former Warriors, other players whose teams failed to qualify for subsequent post season games will look to recapture the gold medal that has eluded Team Canada the past two years. Young guns Evander Kane, John Tavares, and Tyler Myers will be surrounded by veteran leadership with the likes of Smyth and Laich. Regina Pats Jordan Eberle will also be attending the championship as an alternate.
Team Canada will face Italy on Saturday, Latvia on Monday and Switzerland on Wednesday. Games will continue throughout the following week with the Gold Medal game set for Sunday May, 23rd.
Team Canada has not took home gold since 2007, losing to Russia for the title in both 2008 & 2009. Canada has took home the gold 24 times. Head Coaches, Craig MacTavish, Peter DeBoer and Bily Moores will look to change the last two outcomes.
