14 year old goalie Zachary Sawchenko made 30 saves, leading the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 3-1 win over the Swift Current Broncos Tuesday in the WHL Pre Season opener.
16 year old Colton McCarthy opened the scoring for the tribe at 7:13 of the opening period, beating Landon Bow with a wrist shot on top of the crease. With just over minute to go in the first, Broncos 2012 first round bantam pick Glenn Gawdin came out of the penalty shot, came down the right wall and beat Sawchenko to tie the game at one.
The teams battled for position in the second with the Broncos leading heavily on the shot clock, however with 2:59 remaining in the frame Warriors 2011 8th round bantam pick Ben Duperreault took a feed from Brayden Point and beat the Bronco goalie to make it 2-1.
In the third period the Warriors applied pressure onto the opposition by outshooting them 13-7, and with just under four minutes left in the game and on a two man advantage 2012 draft pick Ethan Williams scored his first of the pre-season to make it 3-1.
Sawchenko, who celebrates his 15th birthday on December 30th, had fans on their feet with his 30 saves, while 2010 first round bantam pick Brayden Point had two assists and Duperreault finished with two points.
The Warriors will now practice for the next week and a half, they won’t see any exhibition action until September 7th when they head on the road to play Swift Current in Maple Creek, and they battle the Broncos again September 9th at Mosaic Place.
