The Moose Jaw Warriors and Swift Current Broncos had a thrilling pre-season game in Maple Creek Friday night with the Tribe coming up on the short end of a tight 2-1 game.
Swift Current opened the scoring in the first period when Graham Black beat Warriors goalie Justin Paulic on a goal mouth scramble at 13:35. However, just under a minute later 2011 second round pick Josh Uhrich found Justin Kirsch driving towards the Broncos net, Kirsch buried his first of the pre-season to tie the game at one.
The teams battled for position in the second period and produced several scoring opportunities but both goalies turned them away, keeping the game tied at one rolling into the third.
Moose Jaw opened the final frame strong and had consistent pressure on Broncos rookie import goalie Eetu Laurikainen but weren’t able to slide the puck past the goal line. The final minutes of the third saw the Broncos turn up the heat but Paulic was up to the task and kept them off the score sheet.
In overtime both goalies once again made key saves, more so for Paulic during a Bronco power play. With 29 seconds left in overtime veteran Swift Current defencemen Richard Nedomlel worked his way towards the Warrior net and was able to beat Moose Jaw goalie, lifting the Broncos to the narrow 2-1 win.
The Warriors will have Saturday off and then return to action Sunday with a return match against the Broncos, 2pm at Mosaic Place. Reminder to season ticket holders that the Warriors Office will be open 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 3pm to pick up your packages.
