Daniel Wapple made 32 saves to record his first WHL win as the Moose Jaw Warriors doubled Portland 4-2 Saturday night at Mosaic Place.
Both teams started strong as the action was fast paced and end to end, at 9:41 of the first period Sam Fioretti found Torrin White shorthanded on the right wall of the neutral zone, he snapped the puck past Winterhawks goalie Brendan Burke to make it 1-0 Warriors. With 1:32 left in the first Fioretti made it 2-0 when he finished off a great series of passes that went around the Portland zone and ended up with in the back of the net.
The Tribe extended their lead early in the second with a Jordan Wyton goal at 1:23, just over a minute later rookie Brayden Point extended Moose Jaw’s lead with his first of the year. Moose Jaw had opportunity to add to their lead, Justin Kirsch, Morgan Rielly, and Travis Brown each hit the post on a two man advantage during an eight second span.
Portland didn’t fade away in the third, they battled back and outshot Moose Jaw 15-9 in the period, Brendan Leipsic scored the Winterhawks first goal on a 5-on-3 power play at 13:45. With just over two and a half minutes to go Ty Rattie scored his first of the year to pull the visitors to within two. Portland pulled their goalie late in the game but it was all for none as the Warriors held on for the 4-2 win.
Sam Fioretti led Moose Jaw with a goal and three points; Torrin White had a goal and two points; Morgan Rielly had two assists; Ty Rattie led Portland with a goal and two points; highly touted 2013 NHL Draft prospect Seth Jones had one assist and was a -2.
The win improves Moose Jaw’s record to 3-3, they return to Mosaic Place Sunday to take on the Red Deer Rebels, join James Gallo on Country 100 starting with the PreGame Show at 5:40pm.
