REBELS TOP OIL KINGS IN SHOOTOUT – Colten Mayor scored the decisive goal in a shootout to lift the visiting Red Deer Rebels to a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings in Western Hockey League action on Sunday.
Mayor – with his 13th goal of the season – John Persson and Matt Dumba scored in regulation play for the Rebels (18-18-1-3), who went 2-for-6 on the power play as they climb back to the .500 mark for the season. Deven Dubyk turned in a 37-save effort through regulation and overtime, and was beaten just once on five Oil Kings’ shootout attempts to claim his fourth win as a Rebel.
Jordan Peddle, Cole Benson and Kristians Pelss scored for the Oil Kings (27-10-1-4), who fall to 1-4 in games decided by a shootout. Laurent Brossoit made 19 saves through regulation and overtime, but was beaten twice in the shootout to suffer the loss.
HITMEN 6, HURRICANES 3
Brady Brassart scored twice and set up another to lead the Calgary Hitmen to a 6-3 win over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes on Sunday.
Brooks Macek notched a goal and a pair of assists while Victor Rask, Chase Clayton and Jimmy Bubnick also scored for the Hitmen (22-16-2-1), who trailed 3-0 late in the second period, but scored six unanswered goals en route to their fifth win in a row. Brandon Glover made 21 saves in the win.
Cam Braes and Nick Buonassisi each tallied a goal and an assist and Phil Tot added his sixth goal of the season for the Hurricanes (16-27-0-1), who were outshot 47-24 by the hosts. Damien Ketlo made 41 saves in the setback.
ICE 3, TIGERS 1
Sam Reinhart scored his 12th goal of the season to help the Kootenay Ice to a 3-1 triumph over the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers on Sunday.
Brendan Hurley and Elgin Pearce also scored and Max Reinhart picked up two assists for the Ice (24-13-1-3), who improve to 14-6-1-1 on home ice this season and move into a tie with the Tigers for third place in the Eastern Conference. Nathan Lieuwen made 31 saves, including stopping Hunter Shinkaruk on a third-period penalty shot, to pick up his 18th win of the season.
Emerson Etem tallied his 34th goal of the season for the Tigers (24-15-2-2), who went 1-for-7 on the power play in the defeat. Tyler Bunz made 22 saves in a losing cause.
CHIEFS 5, SILVERTIPS 3
Mitch Holmberg scored his fourth goal in the last three games to help the visiting Spokane Chiefs post a 5-3 win over the Everett Silvertips on Sunday.
Todd Fiddler, Mike Aviani, Blake Gal and Marek Kalus also counted for the Chiefs (20-13-2-3), who pick up their third straight victory and remain firmly in fifth place in the Western Conference. Eric Williams made 27 saves to record his first win as a member of the Chiefs.
Ryan Murray, Kohl Bauml and Trent Lofthouse counted for the Silvertips (7-25-1-7), who drop their third straight decision and remain in 10th place in the Western Conference. Kent Simpson made 29 saves in the setback.
