Fresh off appearing at the All State All-Canadians 2012 NHLPA Mentorship camp in Toronto in July, Moose Jaw Warriors goalie prospect Zachary Sawchenko has been named to Hockey Alberta’s short list for the 2012 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup.
Sawchenko is one of 34 players on the list, 81 players were evaluated at Team Alberta’s Development Camp in Camrose, they then shortened the list to 34, as the tournament approaches the team will eventually trim the roster to the 20 players who will represent their province.
Sawchenko spent last season playing with the Calgary Bantam AAA Royals, he posted a 14-1 record with a 1.47gaa and .944sv%. The Warriors drafted him in the second round, 33rd overall, in the 2012 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.
The Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup features teams from the four western provinces in a four day tournament; this year’s event is November 1st to 4th in Calgary, Alberta. The 2011 edition was held in Moose Jaw, Warrior Brayden Point was a part of Team Alberta, he would eventually join the Tribe late in the regular season, in 14 playoff games Point recorded seven goals and ten points.
